"In Milan there is the Varalli. Let's also name a school after Sergio Ramelli": La Russa's proposal (in the wake of Sala)

Milan, May 24, 2025 – "Today's right has the goal of closing a historical period of opposition. We need people like Marzio and Veltroni but also symbolic gestures. The mayor of Milan has made a proposal that I like very much : to dedicate a street or a square to all the young people killed for their ideas . It would be something that would honor the memory of Marzio, it would be a symbolic fact of enormous value" said Ignazio La Russa , speaking in Bergamo at the conference 'Marzio Tremaglia. Identity, politics, culture'. "In Milan there is a school named after a young leftist, Varalli ( Claudio Varalli, a student at the Istituto Tecnico Turistico in Milan and a member of the Student Movement, killed at 17 in Piazza Cavour by a militant of Avanguardia Nazionale ed.) and I have nothing against it, I'm fine with it. Then we can also name a school after Sergio Ramelli. It would be nice and right ," added the President of the Senate.
Sala's proposalIn recent days, Mayor Sala has relaunched his proposal to name a street or square in the city after the innocent victims of terrorism during the Years of Lead . A proposal put forward on April 29, the 50th anniversary of Sergio Ramelli's death, but which has met with more than one resistance, especially from the political party closest to the mayor: the center-left. "Whoever is mayor must take responsibility for his actions ," Sala emphasized. "I think it's a good initiative. Now, however, let's wait a moment. Also because I launched an idea, but we need to find an adequate space. I confirm that, in my opinion, even if not everyone agrees, it's an initiative that makes sense. So I'll go ahead."

Sergio Ramelli , student and militant of the Fronte della Gioventù, died 50 years ago. The young Milanese passed away after more than a month of agony, following the wounds he suffered during the attack with a wrench by a group of Avanguardia Operaia. It was April 29, 1975. This year, for the anniversary, there have been dedications and events all over Italy, not without controversy, such as the new plaque placed last March 13 (the exact day of the attack) in the Molinari Institute in Milan, the school that the eighteen-year-old attended.
